Derby County duo Will Hughes and Jonathan Mitchell were once again unused substitutes as England’s Under-21s defeated Slovakia 2-1 in their latest 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Finals group game in Poland.

After getting their Group A campaign underway with a goalless draw against Sweden last Friday, Aidy Boothroyd’s side were able to back that result up with a victory against their Slovakian counterparts to put themselves in a strong position to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

They did, however, have to do it the hard way.

Martin Chiren headed Slovakia ahead midway through the first half from a corner, but England hit back to level early in the second period through Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson from close range.

Southampton forward Nathan Redmond then turned the game on its head to put the Three Lions ahead on the hour mark, lashing home from inside the box with the aid of a deflection.

Midfielder Hughes and goalkeeper Mitchell, for the second game in a row, were not called into the action off the bench and watched on as their team-mates claimed a vital three points.

England Under-21s’ will round off their Group A campaign on Thursday evening against the host nation Poland (7:45pm kick-off).
