Derby County’s Jonathan Mitchell was an unused substitute as England’s Under-21s exited the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Finals in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday evening.

After a 2-2 draw with Germany in Poland after 90 minutes, no goals followed in extra-time and the game was decided by a penalty shoot-out, with the Germans running out 4-3 winners.

Aidy Boothroyd's Young Lions went behind when Davie Selke headed home, but Leicester City’s Demarai Gray levelled soon afterwards.

Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham made it 2-1 to England with a close-range finish but Felix Platte's header saw the game go into extra-time and, ultimately, penalties – with the Germans coming out on top.

Although Derby goalkeeper Mitchell didn’t get game time in the tournament, it will no doubt have been an invaluable experience to take into his future career.

The 22-year-old will now undertake a short break before reporting back for pre-season training with the Rams’ squad ahead of the 2017/18 season.
