Derby County’s Chris Martin and Ikechi Anya were unable to help Scotland secure a 2018 FIFA World Cup play-off spot on Sunday evening.

Scotland drew 2-2 in their final qualifier away to Slovenia to finish in third place in Group F.

If they had claimed a victory, the Tartan Army would have finished in second spot and booked a place in November’s play-offs.

However, it wasn’t to be for Gordon Strachan’s men on a frustrating evening in Ljubljana and they ultimately missed out on a play-off spot on goal difference.

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths put Scotland ahead in the first-half with a fine low finish, but two Roman Bezjak goals from set-pieces in the second half turned the game on its head.

There was late hope as Aston Villa's Robert Snodgrass equalised with a few minutes to go - as well as Slovenia's Bostjan Cesar being sent off in added time - but Scotland couldn't get the winner that they craved

Derby striker Martin came into the starting XI and played in the ‘number 10’ position, playing just off of Griffiths, following an impressive showing off the bench against Slovakia last Thursday.

He played 52 minutes in total before being replaced by fellow Ram Anya.

Martin and Anya will report back for duty with the Derby squad early this week to begin preparations for next Sunday’s local derby showdown against Nottingham Forest at Pride Park Stadium.
