Midfielder Luke Thomas was involved in a topsy-turvy encounter at the Stadium of Light this weekend.

It was the game of the day as the 20-year-old saw his Coventry City side beat promotion-chasing Sunderland 4-5. Thomas played 77 minutes before being limping out of the encounter, however, he contributed one assist.

He played a perfectly weighted through ball to Amadou Bakayoko to make it 1-2 to the Sky Blues before being replaced by Charlie Wakefield.

Elsewhere in the division, it was a good afternoon for goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell. He had to wait a while for his chance in the starting 11 but has taken it since his introduction.

Mitchell recorded his third clean sheet in six games at the weekend as his Shrewsbury Town side eased their relegation fears with a 0-2 win over Gillingham. That moved the Shrews up to 13th position and on to 50 points for the season.

Bradford’s chances of staying in Sky Bet League One took a hit at the weekend as they were beaten in the final minute by Bristol Rovers. Jacob Butterfield provided an assist to make it 2-2, however, they would lose to a Jonson Clarke-Harris goal in additional time.

George Thorne was an unused substitute for Luton Town at the weekend during their 3-1 defeat against Charlton Athletic, and in League Two, Timi Elsnik was an unused substitute for Northampton Town in their 1-1 draw against Mansfield Town.

In the Sky Bet Championship, Alex Pearce played the full 90 minutes and helped his side to a point against high-flying Sheffield United.

After falling behind in the first half, Millwall managed to find an equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time to earn a point in their bid to avoid the drop. Chris Martin came on as a 64th minute substitute for Hull City in their 1-0 defeat against Middlesbrough.

In Scotland, it was a disappointing afternoon for Max Lowe’s Aberdeen on Sunday. The Dons were beaten comfortably 3-0 by Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park with Lowe playing the full game. Kyle McAllister’s St Mirren did not have a fixture this weekend.

Aaron Eyoma and Sven Karic starred for National League side Braintree at the weekend as they beat AFC Fylde, who are competing for a place in the EFL next season.

Already-relegated Braintree managed to win 2-1 with Karic playing the full game, whilst Eyoma was substituted on 74 minutes.

In the National League North, Matt Yates played the full game but was on the losing side as they were beaten 1-0 by Southport.

Jauvan Splatt played 53 minutes for Mickleover Sports on Saturday in their 1-1 draw against Lancaster City.

Meanwhile, Nick Blackman did not feature for Sporting Gijon this weekend.
