Curtis Davies has been confirmed as Derby County’s captain for the upcoming 2022/23 season.

The experienced defender, who is the club’s reigning Jack Stamps Player of the Season, was confirmed in the role by Interim Manager Liam Rosenior on Thursday morning.

Davies is entering his sixth season as a Derby player and recently signed a new one-year deal to extend his association with the club.

Since arriving from Hull City in the summer of 2017, the centre-back has played over 150 times for Derby and surpassed 600 appearances in club football earlier this year.

A popular figure both on and off the field and with the Rams’ supporters, the 37-year-old was in Rosenior’s mind the natural choice to lead the side.

Rosenior said: “I have named Curtis as our club captain for this season for obvious reasons.

“He’s a natural-born leader, he has been a huge presence at this football club for a long time and he deserves that role.

“He represents what this club is all about. Curtis has been resilient in terms of playing every minute of every league game last season and he is someone that can drive us on.

“We have got a really strong changing room full of leaders and he is going to add to that; all I want him to do is be himself.”

Midfielder and Academy graduate Max Bird has also been named as the Vice-Captain.

The 21-year-old has been a mainstay in the Derby side in recent years and has made 113 appearances at senior level.

Rosenior commented: “I am delighted to say that Max will be the vice-captain. Max has been here for a long time and understands the history and traditions of the football club and he represents the future as well.”

Rosenior is confident that Davies and Bird, backed up by the rest of the dressing room, will thrive in their respective roles.

He said: “Between Curtis and Max, I am honoured to have those two to represent the football club in terms of their roles.

“They are going to bring their own personalities to the roles. I know supporting them is an unbelievable group of players who have been captains in their own times at different clubs as well.

“In terms of the leadership roles we have at this club, I couldn’t be happier.”
