Harry Wilson has scooped the Carabao Cup Player of the Round for his performance in the Third Round penalty shootout victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The midfielder netted Derby’s opening goal of the game as he rifled a free kick from 30 yards into the top corner, leaving Red Devils goalkeeper Sergio Romero stranded to his spot.

Wilson’s performance drew plaudits from all quarters as he was instrumental in the Rams’ dominant performance throughout.

He netted his spot kick as Frank Lampard’s side managed to record an 8-7 in the shootout to set up a Fourth Round clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Wilson won the Twitter vote with 43% of the votes ahead of Norwich City’s Jordan Rhodes (30%), Manchester City’s Phil Foden (16%) and Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend (11%).

“I’m happy to pick up the award,” Wilson said. “We went there, wanted to play well and put in a good performance. To concede early was disappointing but the way we reacted on the night was great and I thought we were the better team. We got the win on the night and I think we got what we deserved in the end.”

On the free kick, Wilson added: “When it got given, me and Mason were over it and we couldn’t decide if it was too far out to shoot or not. They had a big team so we didn’t want to cross it. I had one look at it and felt confident so I’ve put the ball down, decided to shoot and luckily it went in.”
