Timi Elsnik was the hero for Mansfield Town last night as he netted the winner to ensure they secured their spot in the knockout stages of the Checkatrade Trophy with a 3-2 home victory against Scunthorpe United.

The Slovenian midfielder, who joined the Stags on a season-long loan deal back in August, started the attack with what turned out to be the winner after winning the ball back in midfield.

After playing a neat one-two with the striker, he nutmegged the final defender before firing the ball over the goalkeeper to find the bottom corner.

The win against the Sky Bet League One side ensured Mansfield topped Northern Group H with the maximum nine points available.

They now await to find out who they will face in the next round of the competition.

Elsewhere for Derby's out-on-loan players, Luke Thomas was an unused substitute in Coventry City’s Checkatrade Trophy defeat against Cheltenham Town, whilst goalkeeper Matt Yates played the full game for Hereford FC as they lost 3-0 to Southport in the National League North.
